The Forensic Methodology: Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)

3. The End-of-Life Stage (Modules C1-C4)

What happens when the building is eventually decommissioned?

  • Action: Prioritize mechanical fixings over chemical adhesives to allow for non-destructive disassembly in the future.

  • Does the concrete use a supplementary cementitious material (SCM) like ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBFS)?
  • Is the formwork timber certified?

If your documentation doesn't show these details, your carbon calculation is incomplete, and your project's forensic cost remains unknown.

  1. Check EPDs Early: Do not wait until the procurement phase. Check the carbon credentials of your structural steel and concrete mixes during the design phase.
  2. Specify Performance, Not Just Product: Instead of specifying a brand, specify a maximum carbon intensity (e.g., "Concrete mix must not exceed 250kg CO2e/m3").
  3. Document the Supply Chain: Use digital tracking for all material deliveries. In 2026, the paper trail is as important as the physical build.
